Maggie Kinsella

Maggie Kinsella is a member of the science writing team of the Khalifa University Science and Tech Review and has a passion for sustainability. Prior to joining Khalifa University she was the owner of two companies after a long career in business which included sales, marketing, learning and development, management, finance and more.

Her family keeps her evenings and weekends full with football, music lessons and camping but her love of literature typically lands her on the balcony with a great book and a cup of coffee.

Amani Suleiman AlQaisi

Amani AlQaisi is a professional English-Arabic translator with over a decade of experience in editing and interpretation. She specializes in scientific translations, where she makes technical scientific and research concepts clear to all readers.

Amani believes that translation is the ability to transform everything so that nothing changes.

Momen Khaiti

Momen creates content and has been doing it way before social media existed. When it comes to Arabic spelling and grammar, he’s a bit of a perfectionist.

Steven Griffiths

Dr. Steven Griffiths is senior vice president for Research and Development and professor of practice at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology. At Khalifa University, his responsibilities include development and implementation of the university’s research strategy, management of the university’s research institutes and centers and management of the departments that are accountable for research partnerships, research services, technology management and innovation, research computing and research laboratories.

In addition to his executive management role at Khalifa University, Dr. Griffiths is a member of the Emirates Research and Development Council, advisor to the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science, a Zayed Sustainability Prize Selection Committee member, a member of the Dubai Future Council on Energy, an elected member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee, a Governing Board member of the Graphene Engineering Innovation Center at the University of Manchester, a member of the UAE Artificial Intelligence Expert Group, a board member of the Microsoft Energy Core and a Board member of Human CorpMission established by the Rosatom Corporate Academy and the Higher School of Economics National Research University.

He advised the government of Alberta, Canada on provincial innovation system structuring throughout 2014 and continues to support the global advancement of research and innovation via evaluator and mentor roles in regional and international research and innovation competitions and programs. Dr. Griffiths is associate editor and editorial board member of Elsevier’s international journal Energy Strategy Reviews, Editorial Board member of Elsevier’s international journal Smart Energy as well as associate editor and Editorial Board member of Springer’s international journal Energy Transitions. He further is a non-resident fellow of the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines, which is a leading Institute focused on energy, natural resource and environmental policy.

Dr. Griffiths’ international research engagements further include an appointment as research affiliate at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In addition to these roles, Dr. Griffiths serves as advisor to journals and magazines focused on energy systems and technology innovation while regularly providing insights and commentary on technology and innovation for regional and international publications.

Prior to his position at KU, Dr. Griffiths was vice president for research and associate provost at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. Dr. Griffiths transitioned to the Masdar Institute from his role as executive director of the Technology and Development Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is a position he undertook while simultaneously serving as the founding executive vice president and chief technologist of Light Pharma Incorporated.

Arif Sultan Al Hammadi

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi is currently serving in Khalifa University of Science Technology (KU) as the Executive Vice President.

He has been at KU since its inception in 2007 where he was the founding interim president from 2007 to 2010. Prior to that he was the President of Etisalat University College that was merged with KU in 2007. He is a member of the board for a number of organizations such as the Emirates Scientists Council, Sheik Shakhbout Medical City, ADNOC schools, Sanad Group, the Armed Forces Award for Excellence and Innovation council, Minister of Interiors Award for Scientific Research council, UAE Water Aid Foundation and the Chess and Mind Games Club in Abu Dhabi.

He currently chairs the UAE graduate research conference (UAE_GRC), Khalifa Innovation Center (KIC) and the scientific committee at the UAE Thinkers initiative. He has chaired a number of scientific conferences and competitions and has a number of publications in scientific conferences and journals, and has experience in teaching and research in several fields, including artificial intelligence and computer networks.

During his tenure at KU he has led the establishment of a number of initiatives such as the UAE first Research and Education Network (ANKABUT), the UAE first PhD program in Engineering (Buhooth), the first UAE Smart applications contest, the MBZ International Robotic Challenge (MBZIRC), the first UAE research center in Information and Communication Technology (EBTIC), UAE graduate research conference (UAE_GRC) and the Khalifa Innovation Center (KIC).

He has a PhD degree in Telecommunications which he obtained from Queen Mary University of London (2000) and a Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering (with Honors) from Khalifa University (Etisalat College of Engineering) – UAE (1994). A cycling and skiing enthusiast, he is a golden member of UAE Skiers Club and a board member of Abu Dhabi Cycling Club.
