Biomimetic synthesis, a scientific method that mimics nature’s processes to create complicated natural compounds, is improving to provide a more efficient and sustainable alternative to customary synthesis.

Combining biological-, chemical- and pharmaceutical-science principles and advancements in genome mining helps the approach become more efficient and sustainable.

Key strategies include polyene cyclization, oxidative coupling and biomimetic skeletal rearrangements, which allow for creating biologically relevant compounds that could be useful in medicine.

The study, published in Engineering, highlights the imperative role and challenges of biomimetic synthesis in drug discovery and development and its prospects in developing new pharmaceuticals while preserving natural resources.
